I am currently on a F1 visa and am going to school at University of Indiana. My boyfriend and I are getting married and I want to apply for green card. Do I keep my F1 visa or can continue without?

A foreign student may generally attend school while a properly filed Form I-485 is pending, but a pending adjustment application is not the same as maintaining F-1 nonimmigrant status. Whether F-1 remains valid depends on compliance with the F-1 requirements, including enrollment, work authorization, and SEVIS records. School admission and tuition classification are separate institutional questions. Marriage to a US citizen does not automatically grant immigration status or employment authorization, and the marriage based filing route depends on the spouse’s immigration status, the student’s entry and status history, and adjustment eligibility. Before dropping F-1 requirements or traveling, review the consequences for status, advance parole and adjustment.
